Game Statistics

Greensboro, NC (01/06/02) -- Guilford's Paul Kindem (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) gave coach Butch Estes a fine birthday present as he rallied the Quakers to a 58-55 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win over Virginia Wesleyan Sunday afternoon at the Greensboro Day School. The senior guard tallied 15 of his game- and season-high 18 points in the second half, including a go-ahead three-pointer with 3:49 left that broke a 45-45 tie.

Kindem's heroics proved the difference in a tightly contested league tilt that featured 16 lead changes and 11 ties, seven in the second half. No team led by more than the Marlins' early 8-2 advantage and Guilford (6-5, 3-3 ODAC) enjoyed its largest lead (58-53) after Kindem made two free throws with seven seconds left.

Sophomore forward David Doino's (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) jumper gave the Marlins (6-6, 4-2 ODAC) their final advantage of the game, 45-42, with 8:37 remaining. The Quakers' kept Virginia Wesleyan off the board for the next five and a half minutes. Guilford sophomore guard Ron Bradford (Eden, NC/Greensboro Day School) tied the game at 45 with a three-pointer and Kindem drained the go-ahead trifecta, his third of the half.

Virginia Wesleyan pulled to within one point four times in the final 3:21, but the Quakers maintained the lead by making their last three shots from the floor and six of eight free throws in the final minutes, including four by Kindem. Marlins' guard James Wallace (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) had two potentially game-tying three-pointers rim out in the final 26 seconds.

Senior center Aron McMillian (Greensboro, NC/Greensboro Day School) totalled 13 points and eight rebounds for Guilford. Sophomore forward Josh Connor (Greensboro, NC/Northwest Guilford) notched his team-leading third double-double of the year with 12 points and a game- and career-high 13 rebounds.

Junior guard Louis Park (Virginia Beach, VA/Cox) paced the Marlins with 14 points and rookie forward Peter Warren (Winchester, VA/Handley) added 10 markers. All-ODAC forward Josh Fisher (Leesburg, VA/Loudon County) scored six points, but left the game after two minutes due to a first-half injury.

The Quakers are off to their best 11-game start since the 1992-93 team went 8-3. Guilford meets league-rival Roanoke this Wednesday (1/09) at 7:00 p.m. in the Greensboro Day School's Dillard Athletic Center. The Marlins host ODAC foe Bridgewater Wednesday night (1/09) at 7:00 pm.
