Norfolk, VA (01/26/02) -- Virginia Wesleyan sophomore swingman David Doino (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) scored 12 of his career-high 19 points in the second half in the host Marlins' 71-68 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball victory over Guilford Saturday.
The contest marked the first intercollegiate men's basketball game played in the Marlins' Jane P. Batten Student Center. The win ends Virginia Wesleyan's (10-9, 8-4 ODAC) three-game losing streak against Guilford (11-8, 7-6 ODAC) and avenges a 58-55 loss to the Quakers in Greensboro January 6.
Guilford rallied from an 18-point second-half deficit and took its only second-half lead (59-58) with 3:51 remaining on a Paul Kindem (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) layup. Senior guard James Wallace's (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) three-pointer with 2:57 left restored the Marlins' lead to 61-59. Doino followed with a jumper at the 2:10 mark, which boosted the hosts' edge to 63-59.
Guilford pulled to within one point three times in the game's final 1:24, but Virginia Wesleyan preserved the win by making eight of 10 free throws in the final 41 seconds. Kindem's three-point attempt as time expired missed the mark.
The Marlins found their new building to their liking in the first half as they shot 55.6 percent from the floor and built a 37-20 halftime lead. Guilford managed just 19.2 percent shooting in the opening period. Virginia Wesleyan junior forward Ryan Kahle (McLean, VA/McLean) scored eight of his 14 points off the bench in the first half while Doino and senior forward Josh Fisher (Leesburg, VA/Loudon County) each added seven points. Fisher and Wallace finished with 10 points apiece.
Guilford sophomore forward Jevon Clarke (Apex, NC/Southeast Raleigh) led all scorers with a career-high 23 points and eight rebounds. He scored 12 of his 19 second-half points during an 18-5 Quakers' run midway through the second half that tied the game at 56 with 5:22 left. Clarke made eight of 10 shots from the floor, including all three three-point attempts. Guilford senior center Aron McMillian (Greensboro, NC/Greensboro Day) notched his team-leading sixth double-double of the year with 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Kindem finished with 15 points.

The Yellow Jackets were ranked first in this week's D3hoops.com NCAA Division III poll, but visiting Emory & Henry dealt Randolph-Macon a 91-85 loss Saturday. Virginia Wesleyan hosts Emory & Henry Sunday (1/27) at 2:00 pm.
