Hampden-Sydney, VA (01/23/02) — Hampden-Sydney sophomore guard Brandon Randall (Williamsburg, VA) scored a career-high 26 points, courtesy of seven three-pointers, to lead 10th-ranked Hampden-Sydney to an 88-79 victory over Guilford in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action tonight. The win moves the Tigers to 15-2 overall and 9-2 in the ODAC, while Guilford falls to 10-7 overall and 7-5.
The Tigers opened the game on a quick spurt that put the team up by seven, 11-4, at the 16:32 mark. Guilford rallied with seven straight points to tie the contest at 11 and the two teams battled back-and-forth over the next 11 minutes as Aron McMillian's (Greensboro, NC) free throws tied the contest for the sixth time, 35-35. The Tigers ended the half on a 12-7 run, thanks to a three by Randall and a pair of baskets by junior guard Jay Patrick (Hurt, VA), and led by five at the half, 47-42.
Randall knocked down two more threes in the opening four minutes of the second half as the Tigers rolled out to their biggest lead to that point, 10 points (58-48). The Tiger lead eventually hit 20 (77-57), at the 8:11 mark, on a jumper by Jeff Monroe (Raleigh, NC). However, the Quakers did not quit, going on a 17-5 run over the next six minutes to cut the Tiger lead to eight points (82-74) on a Ron Bradford (Eden, NC) three-pointer with 2:29 to play.
Free throws by Randall pushed the Tigers' lead back to 10 before the Quakers eventually cut it to seven points, courtesy of a Jevon Clarke (Apex, NC) free throw and a bucket by McMillian, but freebies by Matt McKeag (Fairfax, VA) and Monroe sealed the contest for the Tigers.
Hampden-Sydney shot just 39 percent (31-for-80) from the floor for the game and just 35 percent (10-for-29) from beyond the arc, but out-rebounded the Quakers, 50-32. Guilford shot 53 percent from the floor (28-for-53), but hit just three-of-nine three-point attempts, and turned the ball over 23 times.
Randall led all scorers with 26 points, on 7-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc, while Patrick finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Monroe finished the game with 14 points, while Jason Holman (Amelia, VA) scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
McMillian led the Quakers with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Paul Kindem (Chapel Hill, NC) and Clarke each dropped in 13. Josh Connor (Greensboro, NC) finished with 11 points and six boards.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday as the team heads to Bridgewater, VA, to take on the ODAC-foe Eagles at 2 pm.
