FREE THROWS LIFT GUILFORD MEN TO HOOPS WIN OVER VIRGINIA WESLEYAN

Box Score

Greensboro, NC (01/27/01) -- Two free throws by junior forward Brad Woolley (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) with 1:02 left broke a 59-59 tie and gave Guilford the lead for good in the Quakers' 65-59 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball win over Virginia Wesleyan Saturday afternoon. Guilford's (9-10, 8-5 ODAC) fifth triumph in six games gives it a school-record tying eight ODAC wins, its most since 1994-95.

Guilford's victory completed a sweep of the season series with Virginia Wesleyan (11-7, 6-6 ODAC) for the first time in the Quakers' 10 seasons in the league.

The Marlins battled back from a 59-55 deficit with 4:50 left and tied the game at 59-59 with 1:29 remaining on senior center Ron Yuhasz's (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) jumper. Yuhasz fouled Woolley on the next possession and the 51.5 percent free-throw shooter made both shots for a 61-59 Quakers' lead.

Virginia Wesleyan missed two shots on its next trip down the floor and Woolley was fouled with 23 seconds left after corralling a missed three-pointer by junior guard James Wallace (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan). Woolley made two more free throws and senior center Todd Ashworth (High Point, NC/Southwest Guilford) added two foul shots with 14 seconds left to seal the win.

The Marlins rallied from a 14-point first-half deficit and took a 42-41 lead eight minutes into the second period on a layup by sophomore Louis Park (Virginia Beach, VA/Cox). The basket capped a 17-5 Marlins' run that included 11 of senior center Yuhasz's 19 second-half points. The ODAC's leading scorer and rebounder finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds, both game highs. Marlins' junior forward Josh Fisher (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County) tallied eight of his 15 points in the first half and had five boards. Guilford held Virginia Wesleyan's second-leading scorer, sophomore guard Frankie Cabrera (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry), scoreless in 21 minutes. He entered the contest scoring 14.4 points per contest.

Ashworth led three Guilford players in double-figure scoring with 18 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Senior guard Jaron Randall (Trenton, NJ/Princeton Day) netted 12 of his 14 points in the second half and made three steals. Sophomore guard Paul Kindem (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) finished with 12 points, 11 in the first half, and four thefts.

Guilford concludes a three-game homestand Monday night (1/29) versus league-rival Randolph-Macon at 7:00 P.M. The Marlins head to Emory & Henry for a 2:00 P.M. ODAC contest Sunday (1/30) afternoon.
