GUILFORD HANGS ON FOR ODAC MEN'S HOOPS WIN OVER EMORY & HENRY

Box Score

Greensboro, NC (12/07/00) -- Guilford held on for a 53-52 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball win over visiting Emory & Henry Thursday night despite a furious Wasps' rally in the second-half.

The Quakers improve to 3-5 (2-0 ODAC) with their second straight win, while Emory & Henry falls to 2-6 (0-3 ODAC) with its fourth consecutive defeat.

Guilford senior David Zelickson (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Country Day) drilled a three-pointer with 6:41 left in the game to give the hosts their largest advantage of the contest, 44-28. Emory & Henry, which made just eight of 38 field goal attempts (21%) in the game's first 33:38, made their last seven field goals of the game and finished with a 24-9 run.

The Wasps pulled to within 53-48 on a Cortez Watson (Davenport, FL/Oak Ridge) layup with 2:18 remaining. Following one of Guilford's season-high 34 turnovers and a Quakers' time-out, Emory & Henry freshman forward Andrew Gamble (Manchester, TN/Coffe County Central) drilled his second three-pointer of the game with 1:23 left to pull his team to within 53-51. Gamble's trifecta was the Wasps' seventh straight basket, but also their final field goal of the game.

Emory & Henry junior guard Scott Laird (Greenwell Springs, LA/Redemptorist) stole the ensuing inbounds pass from Guilford sophomore Paul Kindem (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) and drew a Kindem foul with 1:16 to play. With his team in the double bonus, Laird sank the first free throw, but missed the second.

Guilford junior Brad Woolley (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) rebounded Laird's miss and the Quakers spread the floor to run down the clock. Guilford freshman Josh Connor (Greensboro, NC/NW Guilford) forced an off-balanced jumper with two seconds on the shot clock, which senior teammate Todd Ashworth (High Point, NC/SW Guilford) recovered with 39 seconds left and a new 35-second shot clock.

The Quakers used more of the clock before Emory & Henry sent Woolley to the line for two shots with 10 seconds left. Woolley missed both free throws. Laird rebounded the second miss, but Woolley stole it back as the seconds ticked off. Laird stripped Connor with five ticks left, but the Wasps could not get the ball down the floor in time for a good final shot attempt.

Ashworth tallied a game-high 14 points and led the Quakers with eight rebounds. Woolley scored in double figures for the fifth straight game with 11 points and added five boards. Watson paced the Wasps with 11 points, including nine in the second half. Laird grabbed 13 rebounds and added six assists plus five steals, all game highs. Emory & Henry played without leading scorer Bryan Pruett (Narrows, VA/Narrows) for the second straight game.

Guilford, off to its first 2-0 ODAC start since 1993-94, plays its final game of the fall semester Saturday afternoon (12/9) at 14th-ranked Hampden-Sydney, which also owns a 2-0 conference mark. Emory & Henry hosts Virginia Intermont Sunday afternoon (12/10) at 3:00 pm.
