Greensboro, NC (9/11/99) -- Sophomore Sean Glarner (Coral Springs, FL/Coral Springs) and senior Stephen Wilcosky (Miami, FL/Palmetto) each scored defensive touchdowns to lead Guilford past visiting Methodist College Saturday afternoon, 21-16, in the Quakers' season opener.
The touchdowns highlighted a strong defensive effort which limited the Monarchs (0-2) to 170 total offensive yards on 70 plays. Guilford's (1-0) defense prevented the Monarchs from converting four fourth-down plays inside the Quakers' 23-yard line, including back to back third-quarter possessions when Guilford stopped Methodist on its own six- and two-yard lines, respectively.
Methodist rallied from a 14-0 halftime deficit and pulled to within 21-14 with 1:54 left in the game on an eight-yard scoring run by junior tailback Patrick Mebane (Burlington, NC/Williams) (28 carries, 51 yards). Sophomore lineman Quincy Malloy (Bennettsville, SC/Marlboro County) set up the score by recovering a Brandon Lockhart (Roxboro, NC/Person) fumble, the Quakers' fifth turnover of the game, on Guilford's 21-yard line with 2:46 to play.
Lockhart redeemed himself on the following possession when he broke off a 16-yard run on a third-and-four play from the Quakers' 21-yard line with 51 seconds left. The first down let Guilford run out the clock despite three Methodist timeouts. Guilford punter John Alt (Fort Lauderdale, FL, Nova) intentionally ran into the end zone to run out the clock to provide the final 21-16 margin.
Guilford jumped out to a 7-0 lead on its third offensive play of the season when freshman quarterback David Hessler (Rockville, MD/Walter Johnson) hit sophomore Chris McKinney (Apex, NC/Apex) with a 36-yard scoring strike.
A Hessler fumble on Guilford's next possession started a Methodist drive on the Quakers' 32-yard line, but senior linebacker Ben Kenerson (Tequesta, FL/Jupiter) stopped Mebane on a fourth-and-three play. Kenerson (10 tackles) set up Glarner's touchdown later in the first quarter when he sacked Methodist quarterback Mat O'Kier (Ocala, FL/Vanguard) and caused the fumble which Glarner recovered.
Trailing 14-0 at halftime, Methodist drove to Guilford's five-yard line on its initial third-quarter possession, but Quaker seniors Jimmy Lamour (Hollywood, FL/Miramar) and Josh Clayton (Greensboro, NC/Northwest Guilford) stopped Mebane for a loss on a fourth and one play.
Guilford held again on Methodist's next possession which started on the Quakers' three-yard line after sophomore Halbert Adderly's (Moore Haven, FL/Moore Haven) 55-yard punt return. The Monarchs used three running plays to get to inside the one-yard line before Lamour and sophomore Drew Baird (Taylors, SC/Wade Hampton) stopped Mebane again on a fourth-down play.
Guilford, which leads the season series with Methodist, 8-3, opens the Old Dominion Athletic Conference season next Saturday at Washington and Lee. The Monarchs visit Salisbury State next week.
