Randolph-Macon Spoils Guilford Homecoming, 27-0

Box Score

Greensboro, NC (10/30/99) -- Senior quarterback Brian Partlow (Winchester, VA/Handley) threw for 377 yards and three touchdowns passes in visiting Randolph-Macon's convincing 27-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football win over Guilford Saturday.

Randolph-Macon improves to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the ODAC with its second straight shutout of Guilford, while the Quakers fall to 3-5 (2-3 ODAC) with their fifth consecutive loss.

Partlow, who established new ODAC records for single-season completions (226) and passing yards (2894), found senior receiver Sean Eaton (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) 13 times for 174 and two scores. Eaton broke Randolph-Macon's records for single-season receptions (74) and receiving yards (1,057) in the win. Partlow completed 31 of 57 attempts with no interceptions for 377 yards.

Randolph-Macon scored on its second play from scrimmage on a 66-yard touchdown run by junior Clint Sullivan (Alexandria, W. Potomac). Guilford punter John Alt (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Nova) pinned the Yellow Jackets down on their own five-yard line, but following a 29-yard completion from Partlow to Eaton, Sullivan broke free off left tackle and scrambled 66 yards, the longest run by a Randolph-Macon player this season. Sullivan finished with a game- and season-high 83 rushing yards.

Guilford downed Alt's fourth of five first-quarter punts on the Randolph-Macon one-yard line, but Partlow moved his club efficiently down field and capped a nine-play, 99-yard scoring drive with a four-yard touchdown pass to Eaton. A bad snap resulted in a failed point-after conversion and left the score at 13-0 headed into the second quarter.

The Yellow Jackets went ahead 20-0 on a 25-yard scoring pass from Partlow to sophomore receiver Derrick Jackson (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) early in the second quarter. Randolph-Macon rookie Bobby Akers (Fairfax, VA/Chantilly) set up the score by recovering a punt which accidentally bounced off of Guilford's Tommy Harris (Greensboro, NC/Western Guilford) on the Quakers' 34-yard line.

Guilford had its best scoring opportunity in the second quarter when senior Aaron Denton (Bunn, NC/Bunn) blocked his second punt of the season and freshman Calvin Lockhart (Roxboro, NC/Person) recovered it on the Randolph-Macon seven-yard line. The Quakers moved the ball to the Yellow Jackets' five-yard line, but the defense held and Guilford turned the ball over on downs.

The Yellow Jackets held the ball for seven minutes and 32 seconds on its first drive of the second half, but came away empty when junior kicker Kevin Cherwa (Virginia Beach, VA/Bayside) missed a 26-yard field goal attempt. Cherwa, also the team's punter, redeemed himself on the team's next possession by completing a 25-yard pass to Keith Harvey (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) on a fake punt which kept a nine-play, 84-yard scoring drive alive. Partlow found Eaton from nine yards out with 55 seconds left in the third quarter to provide the final margin of victory.

Randolph-Macon's defense limited Guilford to 164 total offensive yards. Guilford freshman quarterback Oren Robinson (Anderson, SC/Westside), a converted receiver making his first collegiate start under center, completed just three of 19 passes for 54 yards. Robinson, who played quarterback in high school, started in place of injured classmate David Hessler (Rockville, MD/Walter Johnson). Guilford junior Marques Williams (Riviera Beach, FL/Suncoast) gained 66 rushing yards in defeat.

The Yellow Jackets kept their ODAC title hopes alive headed into next Saturday's league tilt at Bridgewater. Randolph-Macon hopes Guilford upsets league leading Catholic (7-1, 4-0 ODAC) in the Quakers' home finale next Saturday.
