Dirk Earns 11th Consecutive Singles Win as Women's Tennis Travels to Virginia Wesleyan

Quakers’ top flight remains victorious despite 6-1 road setback to Marlins

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. – The Guilford College women's tennis team (7-4, 4-2 ODAC) faced a tough road challenge on Sunday afternoon, falling to Virginia Wesleyan University (2-8, 1-2 ODAC) 6-1 at the Everett Tennis Center.

In doubles play, the No. 1 duo of Carolina Dirk (Port Aransas, Texas) and Erika Mendez (Asheville, N.C.) remained dominant, cruising to a 6-2 victory over Jette Dammeier and Mikisha Thomas. However, the Marlins managed to secure the doubles point by taking the remaining flights.

Singles action was highlighted by the continued brilliance of Dirk at the No. 1 position. She extended her personal winning streak to 11 consecutive matches with a nearly flawless 6-0, 6-1 victory over Tuva Flink.

Ashley Belnap (Winston-Salem, N.C.), Chandler Sizemore (Sandy Ridge, N.C.), McKenna Merritt (Dobson, N.C.), Brooke Tsuei (Summerfield, N.C.), and Amy Soto Salgado (Conover, N.C.) all put up determined efforts in their respective singles matches against a consistent Virginia Wesleyan lineup.

The Quakers will look to return to the win column on Saturday, April 4th, when they travel to face Roanoke College. First serve is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
