FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Guilford College women's tennis team (3-1, 0-0 ODAC) continued their strong start to the season on Saturday afternoon, securing a 6-1 victory over the Scots of Covenant College (2-4, 0-0 CCS) at the Clayton Tennis Center.
Guilford set the tone early in doubles competition. The top-flight duo of
Carolina Dirk (Port Aransas, TX) and
Erika Mendez (Asheville, N.C.) remained in peak form, delivering a clinical 6-1 win over Maisie Tanchanpongs and Estee Verdery. At the No. 2 spot,
Ashley Belnap (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and
Chandler Sizemore (Sandy Ridge, N.C.) engaged in a tight battle with Katie Cummings and Christina English, eventually edging out a 7-5 victory to clinch the opening point for the Quakers.
The momentum carried directly into singles, where Dirk (6-0, 6-1) and Belnap (6-1, 6-0) surrendered only two games combined across their respective matches at No. 1 and No. 2.
Sizemore posted a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 , while
McKenna Merritt (Dobson, N.C.) mirrored that scoreline with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 flight. In the No. 6 spot,
LaNiya Ward (Pittsburgh, Pa.) displayed poise in a competitive match, taking down Ora Hall 7-5, 6-2.
The Quakers are back in action tomorrow, Sunday, March 1st, when they will remain in Fayetteville to face the Monarchs of Methodist University. First serve is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
