GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College women's tennis team (2-1, 0-0 ODAC) kicked off its spring season in spectacular fashion on Saturday afternoon, securing a commanding 7-0 sweep over the Rams of Winston-Salem State University (0-1, 0-0 CIAA) at the McMichael Courts.
Guilford set the tone early in doubles play to clinch the inaugural point of the afternoon.
Carolina Dirk (Port Aransas, TX) and
Erika Mendez (Asheville, N.C.) cruised to a 6-2 victory at the top flight. The Quakers solidified the advantage at No. 3 doubles, where the duo of
McKenna Merritt (Dobson, N.C.) and
Brooke Tsuei (Summerfield, N.C.) delivered a flawless 6-0 performance.
The momentum carried directly into singles competition, where Guilford won all six matches in straight sets. Dirk battled through a competitive opening set at the No. 1 spot to defeat Winston-Salem's McKinley Battle (7-5, 6-4). At the No. 2 position,
Ashley Belnap (Winston-Salem, N.C.) showed composure in a 6-4, 7-5 win over Mikayla Stewart.
Chandler Sizemore (Sandy Ridge, N.C.) earned a 6-4, 6-3 win, while Merritt completed a perfect afternoon with a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Amy Soto Salgado (Conover, N.C.) surrendered only three games in a 6-0, 6-3 win, and
Bethany Lupo (Tabor City, N.C.) closed out the sweep with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 result.
The Quakers will look to carry this momentum forward as they remain at the McMichael Courts on Wednesday, February 25th. Guilford is set to host North Carolina Wesleyan University, with the first serve scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
