Men’s Tennis Drop ODAC Quarterfinal to No.2 Averett

Guilford caps season with 18th straight tournament appearance

DANVILLE, Va. — The Guilford College men's tennis team closed out its 2025 campaign on Wednesday morning, falling 4-0 to No. 2 seed Averett University in the quarterfinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament at the Averett Tennis Courts.

GC (6-12, 4-5 ODAC) battled throughout the morning but were unable to overcome the depth and momentum of the No. 2 seeded Cougars (15-4, 10-1 ODAC), who advanced to the semifinals.

Averett jumped ahead early by taking two of the three doubles matches to secure the opening point. On court two, Henry Austin (Winterville, N.C.) and Turner Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.) fell 6-2 to Sam Egui and Rafael Jodas, while on court three, Rylan Tuten (Asheville, N.C.) and Evan Wong (Greensboro, N.C.) were edged 6-4 by Florian Bert and Lucas Fiandra. The top duo of Andres Mercedes (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and Brandon Hermes (West Hartford, Conn.) were locked in a tight battle on court one, leading 5-4 before the match went unfinished as the doubles point was clinched.

In singles play, Averett quickly extended their advantage. On court six, Johnson fell 6-1, 6-0 to Fiandra, giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead. Moments later, Mukkaladyil pushed Averett closer to victory, defeating Hermes 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Bert sealed the match for the Cougars with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Austin on court three, officially clinching the 4-0 result.

Several other singles contests remained unfinished but showcased competitive efforts by the Quakers. Mercedes, capping off his stellar season, led 6-2, 1-0 on court one over Satwik Kollepalli when the match was halted. Tuten was battling on court four, trailing 6-3, 4-1 to Prabjeet Chandhok, and Wong was down 6-2, 4-1 on court five to Jodas before play was called.

This concludes the 2024-2025 season for the Guilford College men's tennis team.
