ASHLAND, Va. — The Guilford College women's tennis team (7-8, 5-5 ODAC) closed out its regular season on a high note Tuesday afternoon, edging Randolph-Macon College (9-5, 4-5 ODAC), 4-3, in a thrilling Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match at the Banks Tennis Center.
Randolph-Macon gained an early edge in doubles, capturing the top two courts.
Ashley Belnap (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and
Erika Mendez (Asheville, N.C.) were narrowly defeated, 7-6, at the No. 1 spot by Camilla Thurman and Catherine Mowry. At No. 2 doubles,
Jolie Nhouyvanisvong (Greensboro, N.C.) and
Amy Soto Salgado (Conover, N.C.) fell, 6-2, to Emma Turner and Meckenzie Letellier. However, Guilford picked up momentum as
Bethany Lupo (Tabor City, N.C.) and
LaNiya Ward (Pittsburgh, Pa.) cruised to a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles, keeping the Quakers within striking distance.
In singles, Guilford responded with resilience and focus. Mendez delivered a steady performance at No. 2, defeating Mowry, 6-4, 7-5. At No. 4,
Chandler Sizemore (Sandy Ridge, N.C.) turned in a commanding 6-0, 6-3 win over Turner, leveling the match score. With the team's trading points, Soto Salgado ground out a critical three-set win at No. 5 singles. After dropping the opening set, she surged back to defeat Brielle Baughman, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4. Lupo sealed the team victory with another clutch three-set effort at No. 6, topping Layla Gaines, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. Belnap and Nhouyvanisvong both fell in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively, but their earlier efforts in doubles played a key role in building the team's competitive edge.
With the win, Guilford concludes regular-season play on a winning note, building momentum and hope for postseason selection. The Quakers will now await the final ODAC results to determine whether their season will continue into tournament play.
