ASHLAND, Va. – The Guilford College men's tennis (6-9, 3-5 ODAC) team put together one of its most complete performances of the season on Tuesday afternoon, earning a convincing 6-1 road win over Randolph-Macon College (2-13, 0-9 ODAC) in a key ODAC matchup at the Banks Tennis Center.
Guilford came out hot in doubles play, quickly building momentum. At No. 1 doubles,
Andres Mercedes (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and
Brandon Hermes (West Hartford, Conn.) made a statement with a flawless 6-0 victory over Drew Crotts and Karsten Palmer. Not far behind,
Rylan Tuten (Asheville, N.C.) and
Emmanuel Oye (Clayton, N.C.) rolled to a 6-1 win at No. 2 over Evan Holzmacher and Winston Chapman. The Yellow Jackets salvaged a win on court three, where
Turner Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.) and
Kade Talton (Pilot Mountain, N.C.) came up just short, falling 7-5 to Luis Geyne and Jett Hales.
With a 1-0 lead, the Quakers went to work in singles and never looked back. Mercedes delivered a clinical performance at the top spot, blanking Crotts 6-0, 6-0 to extend his singles win streak. Hermes followed suit at No. 2, taking down Palmer 6-3, 6-1 with confidence.
Henry Austin (Winterville, N.C.) was nearly flawless at No. 3, dispatching Holzmacher 6-0, 6-1, and Oye continued his strong spring with a 6-2, 6-2 victory on court four. Talton capped off Guilford's dominance with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 6. Randolph-Macon's lone point came at No. 5 singles, where Johnson fought hard but fell 6-3, 7-5 to Geyne.
Guilford wraps up the regular season on Friday, April 26, when they travel to Hampden-Sydney College. First serve is set for 4 PM..
