ASHLAND, Va.– The Guilford College men's lacrosse team faced a challenging road test on Saturday afternoon, taking on Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponent Randolph-College at Day Field.
Randolph-Macon controlled the game in all facets, outshooting Guilford 47-24 while holding a 25-9 advantage in shots on goal. The Yellow Jackets won the possession game, winning 16-of-19 faceoffs and scooping up 49 ground balls compared to the Quakers' 22.
Starting in-between the sticks for the Quakers was
Darius Safavi-Abbassi (Culver City, Calif.) who faced an onslaught of shots from the Yellow Jackets offense, recording four saves against 16 shots on target while allowing 12 goals, bringing his save percentage to .479. He took the loss to drop to 2-7.
Gavin Dellinger (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) entered at half time, making five saves against three goals while facing a total of 9 shots on frame, moving his save percentage to .339. On the opposite side of the field, Jack Twomey took the reins in goal, achieving an efficient night with eight saves against one goal. He improves to a record of 7-3.
The Quakers sole offensive contributor was
Davis Palombo (Greensboro, N.C) who notched a tally for the quakers, bringing his season total to a team-high 16 goals.
Aimery Workman (High Point, N.C.) and
Wyatt Dwyer (Seattle, Wash.) each contributed with a trio of ground balls.
Gavin Brown (Charleston, S.C.),
Bashwyn Fitch (Charleston, S.C.),
Miles Glass (Greensboro, N.C.), and
Drew Sizemore (Greensboro, N.C.) each had a pair of ground balls.
Grant Sobel, Logan Sinsebox, and Avery Tankersley each recorded a hat-trick for the opposing team, while seven other Yellow Jackets pitched in a goal each. Tankersley led the team in helpers distributing a hat-trick of them. Carter, Sinsebox and Matthew Sutty added a pair each.
RM-C came out firing, scoring seven unanswered goals in the first quarter. Tankersley opened the scoring early on, followed by goals from Sinsebox and Sobel. Randolph-Macon took advantage and applied pressure when Guilford were down a man, securing four goals during the advantage play. The Yellow Jackets ended the frame with a tally of 7-0.
The second quarter saw more of the same, as the Yellow Jackets extended their advantage with five more goals, highlighted by a second from Sinsebox and Tankersley as Sobel notched his hat-trick early on. Guilford finally broke through at the 4:12 mark of the second quarter when Palombo found the back of the net, scoring the Quakers' lone goal of the afternoon.
After halftime, Randolph-Macon slowed their offensive pace but remained in control. They added two goals in the third, with Tankersley and Sinsebox securing their hat-tricks, extending the lead to 14-1. In the final period, the Yellow Jackets tacked on two more insurance goals from Jacob MacMillan and Ben Tomasic.
The men's lacrosse team will look to break their losing-streak as they return home for their next ODAC contest against the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday, April 2nd. First face-off is set for 3:30.
