GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College men's tennis team (3-4, 2-3 ODAC) faced a tough challenge on Sunday afternoon, falling 6-1 to Averett University (6-2, 4-0 ODAC) in a conference matchup at the Dorothy Ragsdale McMichael '37 Centennial Class Courts.
Averett started off hot, sweeping doubles play to grab the early lead. At No.1 doubles,
Andres Mercedes (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and
Brandon Hermes (West Hartford, Conn.) fell 6-2 to Prabjeet Chandhok and Jaeden Mukkaladyil.
Henry Austin (Winterville, N.C.) and
Emmanuel Oye (Clayton, N.C.) put up a fight at No.2, but came up short in a tight 7-5 loss to Rafael Jodas and Sam Equi. On court three,
Evan Wong (Greensboro, N.C.) and
Rylan Tuten (Asheville, N.C.) couldn't get past Florian Bert and Alex Donnelly, dropping the match 6-1.
In singles, the Quakers looked to bounce back but struggled to gain momentum. Mercedes came through at No.1 with an impressive 6-2, 6-4 win over Satwik Kollepalli, securing Guilford's only point of the day. At No. 2, Hermes fell to Mukkaladyil 6-1, 6-1, while Austin dropped his match 6-1, 6-0 against Bert at No.3. Averett continued to roll in the lower flights, as Chandhok defeated Tuten 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4. On court five, Jodas edged out Wong in a close first set before pulling away for a 7-5, 6-0 victory. Egui wrapped things up for the Cougars, beating Oye 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6.
Up next for the men's tennis team is a non-conference matchup against Methodist University, at their place on Wednesday, March 26. Start time is set for 3 PM.
