Men’s Lacrosse Struggles in ODAC Opener Against Roanoke

Maroons’ offensive onslaught overwhelms Quakers in 29-3 defeat

GREENSBORO, N.C.– The Guilford College men's lacrosse team (2-6, 0-1 ODAC) opened Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Wednesday afternoon, facing a dominant Roanoke College Squad, falling 29-3 at Appenzeller Field.

The home team secured a season-low three points on three goals and no assists, racking up 15 shots with nine on target. The Maroons led in almost every statistical category, starting with ground balls (46-15), faceoffs (31-4), shots (70-15), and caused turnovers (16-9). The Quakers saw more action in-between the frame, securing 11 saves versus Roanoke's six.

Darius Safavi-Abbassi (Culver City, Calif.) got the start in net, making four saves against 11 goals, facing 26 total shots. The California native drops to a save percentage of .494 and a record of 2-5. Gavin Dellinger (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) came in at the beginning of the second quarter and closed the game out for the Quakers. Dellinger made seven saves against 18 goals, while facing 44 shots. The Maroons saw three different keepers take the stand. Starting with Alex Feuer, who made one save against one goal, improving to 5-2. Chris Schwartz followed with one save against two goals. Cole Devine closed out the game making four saves.

Bashwyn Fitch (Charleston, S.C.), Miles Glass (Greensboro, N.C.), and Aimery Workman (High Point, N.C.) were the sole goal scorers for the Quakers, all unassisted. Drew Sizemore (Greensboro, N.C.) made some noise on the defensive end, leading the team in forced turnovers and ground balls with five each.

Roanoke wasted no time asserting their dominance almost instantly, jumping out to an 11-1 lead in the first quarter. The visitors scored early and often, with Patrick Cullen kicking things off just over a minute into the game, followed by goals from Luke Kammerman and Clayton Bewick. Noah Bell pitched in a goal of his own before Luca Docking and Jack Savoie added a brace each to the tally mark before the Kammerman brothers wrapped up their scoring efforts for the quarter. Workman managed to get the Quakers on the board with just two seconds left in the quarter, cutting the deficit to 11-1

RC continued their relentless attack in the second quarter, outscoring the Quakers 8-2. Wyatt Whitlow secured his first of the game, while Docking notched his hat-trick just minutes into the second. Docking followed with yet another just eight seconds after securing his trio of goals. Jack Savoie, Blake Rieger, Kai Hayami, and Tyler Schmelzer also contributed to Roanoke's growing lead. Guilford fought back with two goals in the period as Glass struck unassisted at the 9:01 mark and Fitch scored in the final minute of the half, making the score 19-3 at halftime.

The second half saw Roanoke maintain full control, keeping Guilford off the scoreboard while adding ten more goals. Although slowing their scoring pace in the third quarter, they still managed six goals. The final stanza of gameplay saw Roanoke close out with four goals, sealing their 3-0 start to conference play by a tally of 29-3.

The Quakers will aim to reset and refocus as they prepare for another ODAC test at home against No. 10 Washington and Lee University on Saturday, March 22nd. First face-off is set for 1 PM.
