GREENSBORO, N.C.– The Guilford College men's lacrosse team (2-3, 0-0 ODAC) snapped a three-game losing streak in emphatic fashion, delivering a commanding performance in their return to Appenzeller field with a dominant 23-6 victory over Oglethorpe University on Saturday afternoon.
As a squad, Guilford notched 32 total points on 23 goals and nine assists, amounting 63 shots with 47 on frame. The Quakers were victorious in the battle for ground balls securing 47 to Oglethorpe's 25 and holding a 21-30 advantage in faceoffs.
In goal for the Quaker's was
Darius Safavi-Abbassi (Culver City, Calif.) earning the win with six saves against four goals, improving his save percentage to .600.
Lucas Dellinger (Oxford, N.C.) closed out the game with one save against two goals, sealing a .333 save percentage. Xay Duax was the last line of defense for the Stormy Petrels, amounting 23 saves against 23 goals with a .500 save percentage. Alexander Martelo Reyes saw a few minutes in net, although typically a midfielder, the freshman secured one save against no goals.
Frontrunners for GC included
Kenneth Crowley (Charlotte, N.C.) who secured his first goal of the season alongside his second career hat trick, scoring four goals on six shots, all on target, leading all scorers.
Seth Woods (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) secured his fifth hat-trick of his collegiate career.
Davis Palombo (Greensboro, N.C.) continues to lead the team in scoring, showcasing an impressive game across all statistical categories. He not only recorded a hat trick in goals but also in assists bringing his season totals to 12 goals and four assists.
Bashwyn Fitch (Charleston, S.C.),
Jacob Mills (Culpepper, Va.), and
Gavin Brown (Charleston, S.C.) each had a pair of goals alongside one helper each.
Jason Campbell (Fairfax, Va.) and
Cole Plaster (Culpepper,Va) found the back of the net twice, making it their first scoring efforts of the season. Senior
Cam Walters (Greensboro, N.C) pitched in with a goal and an assist, his first one of the season.
Aimery Workman (High Point, N.C.) and
Sam Newton (Greensboro, N.C.) added a goal apiece with
Miles Glass (Greensboro, N.C.) rounding out a well-distributed offensive effort with an assist. Israel Pendleton-Moore led the Stormy Petrels with three goals. Liam Miller pitched in with two of his own, while Matthew Colbey rounded out their scoring efforts.
The Quakers came knocking at the door very quickly, scoring seven first-quarter goals while holding the Stormy Petrels to just one. Woods got the scoring started at the 12:34 mark with an unassisted goal, and after an early response from Pendleton-Moore, Guilford went on a scoring spree. Brown, Crowley, Newton, Campbell, and Palombo each netted goals in a relentless stretch. Crowley struck again with just 2:45 left in the quarter, assisted by Glass, giving GC a 7-1 lead heading into the second.
All gas, no breaks for the Quakers as they added five more goals in the second stanza of gameplay. Palombo netted his second at 13:05, followed by a man-down goal from Plaster off a Walters assist. Woods then added his second, this time on a man-up opportunity with an assist from Brown. Oglethorpe managed to slip one by the backline at the 6:12 mark, but Mills and Fitch quickly responded with no hesitation as they each found the back of the net before halftime, thanks to Palombo, extending Guilford's lead to 12-2.
The Quakers continued to dominate in the third, outsourcing Oglethorpe 6-3. Workman, Campbell, and Palombo added to the tally, while Crowley and Mills each scored unassisted goals. Oglethorpe's offense found brief success with three goals in the quarter but it just wasn't enough as the Quakers entered the final period with an 18-5 advantage.
Guilford closed out the game with another five-goal burst in the final quarter. Woods completed his hat trick off a feed from Mills, Walters netted a goal of his own and Crowley secured his fourth of the evening. Fitch and Brown capped off the scoring, sealing a dominant 23-6 victory.
The Men's Lacrosse team will look to build this momentum as they continue their homestead on March 8, facing Penn College. First face-off is scheduled for 2 PM.
