Women’s Tennis Blanks Ferrum in ODAC Opener

Quakers sweep singles and doubles for 7-0 shutout victory at home

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Opening Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play in commanding fashion, the Guilford College women's tennis team shut out Ferrum College, 7-0, at the Dorothy Ragsdale McMichael '37 Centennial Class Courts on Sunday afternoon.

The Quakers (3-1, 1-0 ODAC) controlled the match from start to finish, sweeping both doubles and singles play while capitalizing on forfeits by the Panthers (0-2, 0-2 ODAC) in two singles and one doubles matchup.

Guilford stormed ahead early by securing the doubles point with decisive victories. The top-flight pairing of Jolie Nhouyvanisvong (Greensboro, N.C.) and Chandler Sizemore (Sandy Ridge, N.C.) blanked Madison Cox and Skylar Honeycutt, 6-0, to set the tone. On the second court, Amy Soto Salgado (Conover, N.C.) and LaNiya Ward (Pittsburgh, Pa.) battled to a tight 7-5 win over Hannah Huffman and Gabby Mendoza, sealing the 1-0 lead. The Quakers also claimed the third doubles matchup by forfeit.

Building on their doubles momentum, Guilford overwhelmed Ferrum in singles action. At the #1 position, Ashley Belnap (Winston-Salem, N.C.) cruised past Cox with a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win. Erika Mendez (Asheville, N.C.) followed suit at #2, surrendering just one point in a 6-1, 6-0 rout of Huffman. The Quakers' dominance continued down the lineup, with Nhouyvanisvong dispatching Honeycutt, 6-0, 6-1, at #3. Sizemore added another shutout performance, blanking Mendoza, 6-0, 6-0, in the fourth flight. Guilford secured two additional singles wins by forfeit, with Soto Salgado and Bethany Lupo (Tabor City, N.C.) each adding victories at #5 and #6, respectively.

The women's tennis team aims to maintain their strong conference start as they travel to Lynchburg, Va., to face Randolph College on March 1. Start time is set for 1 P.M.
