GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Guilford College men's tennis team dominated its Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener, sweeping Ferrum College 7-0 at the Dorothy Ragsdale McMichael '37 Centennial Class Courts on Sunday afternoon.
The Quakers (1-1, 1-0 ODAC) surged ahead early, securing all three doubles matches in commanding fashion. In the top-flight matchup,
Andres Mercedes (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and
Brandon Hermes (West Hartford, Conn.) set the tone with a swift 6-1 victory over Gabriel Alvarez and Emilio Munguia.
Emmanuel Oye (Clayton, N.C.) and
Evan Wong (Greensboro, N.C.) followed suit in the No. 2 doubles position, also conceding just one game in a 6-1 decision over Austin Brigman and Jairo Herbas.
Turner Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C) and
Kade Talton (Pilot Mountain, N.C.) completed the sweep in the third pairing, besting Spencer Buse and Tripoom Jala 6-3.
Riding the momentum into singles play, Guilford kept its foot on the gas, winning all six matches in straight sets. At No. 1 singles, Mercedes showcased his dominance with a 6-1, 6-0 rout of Jala.
Henry Austin (Winterville, N.C.) took care of business in the No. 2 spot, overpowering Munguia 6-0, 6-4.
Rylan Tuten (Asheville, N.C.) delivered a flawless performance at No. 3, shutting out Brigman 6-0, 6-0. Wong extended the Quakers' stronghold with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Alvarez at No. 4 singles, while Johnson and Talton battled through competitive sets to secure their respective wins. Johnson edged Aukiem Mitchell 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5, and Talton mirrored the effort in the No. 6 slot, topping Herbas 7-5, 6-3.
Guilford continues their conference play as they face Randolph College on the road on March, 1. Match time is set for 1 P.M.
