BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. – The Guilford College men's tennis team (0-1, 0-0 ODAC) competed in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon, taking on Montreat College (1-1, 0-0 AAC) at Charles D. Owen High School. Despite a strong effort in doubles and singles, the Quakers fell 6-1 to the Cavaliers.
Â
At the top doubles spot,
Emmanuel Oye (Clayton, N.C.) and
Andres Mercedes (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) powered their way to a 6-3 victory over Montreat's Youssef Idboufous and Fabrizio Moreno. The Cavaliers took the remaining two doubles matches to secure the point.
Â
Mercedes carried that momentum into singles play, rallying for a comeback win over Vitor Monteiro, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7, to earn Guilford's lone point of the match.
Â
George Hardie (Liberty, N.C.),
Turner Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.),
Alex Brown (Burlington, N.C.), and
Ahmaad Abdul-Haqq (Greensboro, N.C.) all contributed competitive efforts across the lineup, gaining valuable early-season experience against a well-matched Montreat squad.
Â
The Quakers return home to the Ragsdale Courts on Saturday, February 7, when they take on the Eagles of North Carolina Central University at 3:30 p.m.
