No. 20 Maroons Outmatch Men’s Lacrosse in Mid-Week Clash

Quakers lose third straight in conference play

SALEM, Va. -- For their last away stretch this spring, the men's lacrosse traveled upstate once more to face their third straight ranked opponent, #13 Roanoke. A first half surge from the Maroons proved to be dominant, as the Quakers were eventually bested by a 25-6 scoreline.

GC drops their third straight, sitting at 6-8, 3-4 versus conference opponents. RC extends their undefeated conference record to 6-0, and advances to 11-2 overall.

Lucas Satterwhite (Oxford, N.C.) faced no easy task in his first collegiate start, but made double-digit saves with 11, as his record drops to 0-1. Opposing netminder Taylor Lewis got a half of action, and secured his seventh win of the season.

All six goals from the visitors came from six different goalscorers; Andrew Burch (Cary, N.C.) the sole Quaker with a multi-point effort. The senior posted a score and two assists in the defeat.

In a split effort from the faceoff circle, Jax Atkins (Mechanicsville, Va.)handled the majority of faceoffs, winning 11 out of a possible 29. Ezekiel Gravely (Morganton, N.C.) made his defensive presence seen, leading the team in ground balls with five.

For the ranked Maroons, Luca Docking and Dominic Cuomo led their potent offense with respective hat-tricks.

A scoring onslaught was on the cards, both teams were involved for four goals in the first five minutes of play. However, RC were on the better end, taking the quick 3-1 lead, but Collin Deese (Mebane, N.C.) helped to alleviate GC's early deficit with his second collegiate goal. Across the last 10 minutes of the first stanza, Roanoke kept their foot on the gas, netting seven more, including two down the stretch to blow up the contest 10-1. Deese got on the board once more, but on the assisting side, as he found Burch for a late-stanza score to cut the lead to eight before the second was underway.

The Quakers seemed on the right track to make noise; Alvarez with the team's third score, and their second in as many minutes. The Maroons replied straight back however for their 11th just a minute later. The visitors seemed to lock down their opponents in the ensuing stretch, playing quality defense and forcing shots wide, but could not capitalize on their own offensive chances. Right as Roanoke was able to get a clear, they were able to run down the field, and netted their 12th score behind Satterwhite. Three more went the home team's way, relentless on their way to a 12 goal lead, 15-3.

The game trend was identical for the second half; a Jason Campbell (Fairfax, Va.) goal in the third was followed by six other scores for the Maroons in the third, as Roanoke surpassed the 20-goal mark. Sam Newton (Greensboro, N.C.) and Atkins did give Guilford a slight spark heading into the last quarter, but the home team tacked on four more goals, as the contests' score was finalized at 25-6.

The Maroons were able to dominate in total shots 67-35, proving to be the driving force behind their victory.

Guilford gets their first Saturday off for the first time since early March, next returning to the field on April 20, for a crucial away clash versus Shenandoah. Start time for the conference contest is set for 1:00 p.m.
