Offense Dominates in the Rain, Men’s Lacrosse Propels Past Calvin

Fitch with a career-high five goals in stellar effort

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- After suffering a heart-breaking defeat on Wednesday night, the Guilford men's lacrosse team looked to get back on track versus visiting Calvin. The offense fired on full cylinders in a complete team effort, scoring double-digit goals in an impressive 15-10 win.

The Quakers improve to 3-3, while the Knights drop their second game, sitting at 4-2.

Darius Safavi-Abbassi (Culver City, Calif.) wasn't nearly as dominant from his last outing, but still made six saves in the contest. Opposing netminder Corgan Schaumburg faced an onslaught of shots from Guilford, making 11 saves and giving up 15 behind the net.

Defensively, Jax Atkins (Mechanicsville, Va.) stamped his place as the leading faceoff specialist, accounting for 16 wins in the circle, and contributing six ground balls as well, a team-high. Drew Sizemore (Greensboro, N.C.) made his presence known on defense, scooping up five ground balls, by far the most he has collected this season.

Sophomore midfielder Bashwyn Fitch (Charleston, S.C.) had a stellar afternoon in the rain, scoring a third of Guilford's goals, five in total. Seth Woods (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) tallied six points, with four goals and two assists. Gavin Brown (Charleston, S.C.) played crucial team offense, resulting in a team-high three assists for his squad.

As for visiting Calvin, Josh Moyer led with three scores.

The Knights got the rainy contest started off with a score about three minutes in, and used a Quaker turnover, turning it into a successful offensive possession with their second goal in as many minutes. GC turned it around, as Fitch got his afternoon underway with a solo effort to cut their deficit to one. On their ensuing offensive possession, the Calvin defense held firm from multiple Guilford shots, but Fitch's eventually fell through, for his second and the team's second goal. The game was Quaker-dominated by this point, controlling possession. Woods got on the scoresheet on a nice feed from Brown, the team's third straight to take the lead. Towards the end of the first, Andrew Burch (Cary, N.C.) got in on the offensive party, netting one in for the 4-2 lead, heading into the second stanza.

Fitch deservedly got his hat-trick entering the next period, scoring just under a minute into action. The Knights stopped the bleeding after a successful clear a few minutes later, getting their third to cut their deficit to two. The loomy conditions started to make its way into the game, stifling any offensive momentum from both squads, leading to multiple turnovers. The Quakers managed to find their way through the adversity, with Woods scoring yet again to restore their three-goal advantage. Calvin got the next faceoff win, and used it to reply straight back, the game truly competitive at this point. However, Guilford seemed unfazed by their opponents, and played excellent team ball to set up their seventh score, Dirk Meinhart (Garfield, Ky.) who found his way on the scoreboard. Jordan Warners for the visitors would give them some stability with their fifth, and GC went into the half up two.

Much like the first half, there seemed to be little that separated both teams, keeping pace with one another. Woods completed Guilford's second hat-trick of the afternoon, netting his third to put the home side up 8-5. Calvin got as close to GC as possible in the next stretch, scoring a few minutes later, then found their way to the net again after a Guilford turnover to make the game score 8-7. The third stanza laid witness to the longest scoring drought thus far; over eight minutes passed by with no scores. The rain made its presence known once more, turnovers aplenty between both squads, but Meinhart ended the drought with his second goal. Atkins once the next faceoff of a violation, and the red-hot Fitch scored his fourth shortly after to propel the Quakers into double-digit figures, up 10-7, and the score remained that way as the final quarter approached.

Guilford eventually confirmed their third win of the year in the last period. Goals from Fitch, Brown and Burch ballooned their advantage to five goals, which was insurmountable for the Knights to overcome. The icing on top, Aimery Workman (High Point, N.C.) and Woods scored late, tallying a season-high fifteen goals en route to the 15-10 victory.

The Quakers continue play at Armfield next week, as the William Peace Pacers come to Greensboro for a non-conference contest. First faceoff on Wednesday, March 13 is set for 6:00 p.m.
