LEXINGTON, Va. -- Traveling upstate for their first conference game of the spring, the men's lacrosse team faced off against No. 13/11 Washington and Lee at Wilson Field. Despite keeping the contest close through the first 15 minutes, the Generals assumed control thereafter, sending the Quakers to the 24-6 loss.
Guilford drops to 4-5, and 1-1 against conference foes. Washington and Lee advance their record to 6-3, 2-0 in the ODAC.
Darius Safavi-Abbassi (Culver City, Calif.) was swarmed with the Generals offense, making just eight saves with 19 goals surrendered at a save percentage of .296. With the game out of hand, backup keeper Lucas Satterwhite (Oxford, N.C.) was thrusted into action, and made a save in limited time.
Jax Atkins (Mechanicsville, Va) was beaten on faceoffs overall for the first time this season, going just 9-25 in the circle. Eli Chambers (Salem, Va.) fared the same, having two wins out of a possible six. Drew Sizemore (Greensboro, N.C.) led all Quakers in ground balls with four.
Gabe Alvarez (Cary, N.C.) scored a hat trick in the defeat, and Seth Woods (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) was the only other GC player in double-figures with two. For the home team, Alex Brown had a seven-point effort on the day with five goals and two assists.
The Generals found their way onto the scoreboard first, as Jack Elliot netted a goal after initially swarming the offensive zone through the first few minutes. The Quakers had a quick answer going down the other way, after a shot by Dirk Meinhart (Garfield, Ky.) went wide, Alvarez immediately took his chance, and scored to tie the contest. Guilford had their chances to create more opportunities, but a turnover by Sizemore eventually led to W&L's second score of the quarter. Another turnover by the visitors resulted positively in Washington and Lee's favor, taking the advantage to go by two. The contest could have been out of hand quickly, but a clutch turnover from Cam Walters (Greensboro, N.C.) sparked a quality offensive possession from Guilford in which Woods cut their deficit to one once more. Both teams traded scores down the stretch, and the Generals were only up 4-3 heading into the next stanza.
With turnovers and clears aplenty early on in the second, W&L took advantage of another GC turnover, converting it into their fifth goal. With the ensuing faceoff won by the Generals, it was turned into another quick score, going up by three yet again. Woods provided some needed help for Guilford by cutting into the lead, but it was the closest they would come to fighting their deficit. The Generals were in clear control after this, eventually scoring four more before the clock ran down, now in double digits and the six-goal advantage at the half, 10-4.
Victory was in clear sight for the home side, with the game quickly getting out of hand. The Generals outscored Guilford 14-1 over the last 30 minutes of regulation, condemning the Quakers to the 24-6 defeat.
Guilford looks to get back on track in conference play, with their next chance back at home for a matchup against visiting Randolph College. First faceoff on Wednesday, March 27 is set for 6:00 p.m.
