The sixth-seeded Guilford College men's tennis team hit the road to face third-seeded Shenandoah University in the ODAC Quarterfinals. Coming down to the final set, the Quakers claimed the match 5-4.
In doubles action, Guilford dropped the second doubles match 8-1. Shortly after, the team of
Evan Wong and
Rylan Tuten gave the Quakers their first point with an 8-3 win.
On court one,
Andres Mercedes and
Tye Sasser battled and went on to win the match, 8-6. Going to singles play, Guilford led 2-1.
Dominik Pocrnja (5 singles) and
Emmanuel Oye (6 singles) won in straight sets as the Quakers went up 4-1.
However, Shenandoah captured wins at second, third and fourth singles.
While all of this was going on, a battle was occurring at first singles. Mercedes won the first set, 6-2 but unfortunately dropped the second set, 4-6.
In the third set, the Hornets were up 4-2 and looked to claim the win. Mercedes had other thoughts as he won the final four points to win the set, 6-4 and the match overall for GC, 5-4.
Guilford advances to the ODAC Semifinals on Saturday, April 29 to face the second-seeded Averett University Cougars. The match will take place at Washington and Lee University with a start time to be announced later.
