Guilford, Josh Hill Hold Leads After 36 Holes at West Cup in California

La VERNE, Calif – Guilford College's men's golf team holds a two-stroke lead entering Tuesday's final round of the West Cup. The Quakers shot 299-301-600 (+32) in Monday's first two rounds and have a two-shot edge over the tournament host, the University of La Verne (301-301-602). 

Guilford junior Josh Hill shares the individual lead in the 85-man field after 36 holes with two others. Hill shot an even-par 71 on the 6.403-yard Sierra La Verne Country Club in Monday's first round and followed with a three-over 74 for a score of 145. He birdied his last hole of the day, the par-four 18th. George Fox University's Alex Plusquellec (75-70-145) and California Lutheran University's Slater Slvage (75-70-145) share the top spot. La Verne's Pitiluk Phanomchai sits two strokes off the pace at 73-74-147, followed by Guilford's James Mishoe (76-72-148) and the University of Redlands' Cade Lawson (75-73-148).

Guilford claimed the top team position by placing four golfers among the top-21 individuals after Monday's action. California Lutheran shot 308 in its first round but delivered the day's low team score with a second-round 296 that moved it within four shots of the lead at 604. Trinity University (314-306-620), Pacific Lutheran University (316-305-621) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (309-312-621) round out the top-five teams. Both Guilford and Pacific Lutheran have a tournament-best 103 pars after two rounds.

The Quakers' Zachary Evens shares 13th place after shooting 75-77-152, three shots ahead of teammate Harrison Frye, who turned in opening scores of 77-78-155. He stands in a share of 21st place individually. Guilford's Louis Lambert struggled to an 86-81-167 that has left in in a share of 73rd place individually.

Coach Justin Tereshko's club is one of 12 competing teams ranked among the top-50 in the latest Golfstat.com NCAA Division III Head-to-Head Ratings. Guilford is ranked ninth and second only to number-eight Claremont-Mudd-Scripps among ranked teams in the 16-team event.

The tournament concludes Tuesday with 18 holes.
