SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Guilford College's women's swimming team opened its season Saturday at the Seventh Annual Women's Invitational at Converse College. The meet featured a variety of teams representing NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA teams. Guilford did not earn a team score.
The Quakers had four contestants in the meet, including Isabel Gutierrez, who clocked three individual times and was part of Guilford's 200-yard freestyle relay. She placed 15th among 22 contestants in the 100 individual medley in a time of one minute, 14.75 seconds. Her time in the 100 breaststroke (1:26.70) placed 20th among 24 swimmers. Gutierrez also swam the 200 IM where she came home in 16th place out of 19 with a time of 2:48.50.
Sophomore Carolyn O'Halloran competed in the 500 freestyle where she touched in 6:25.12, good for 14th place in the 18-person field. O'Halloran also swam the 100 butterfly in 1:12.16, which was 18th-best.
Courtney Packer (1:36.84) and Jeanne Marie Darrow (1:51.35) both competed in the 100 freestyle, and joined Gutierrez and O'Halloran to swim a 2:26.22 in the 200 freestyle relay. The time placed 14th in the field.
Coach Ashley Cox's team resumes competition October 14 at the annual Old Dominion Athletic Conference Relays, hosted by Washington and Lee University.
